11 Moss Stitch Crochet Blanket Free Patterns
The moss stitch is single crochet and chain, repeated. That is the whole stitch. It makes a woven-looking fabric with good drape, it needs no counting once you are in the rhythm, and it shows off color changes well. You may also see it called the linen stitch, the granite stitch or the woven stitch; it is the same thing.
We opened and checked each of these 11 free patterns. There are chunky lap blankets that finish in a weekend, baby blankets in soft acrylic, a rainbow stripe version and a corner-to-corner take on the stitch. Each one lists the yarn and hook the designer used, so you can match the size or swap in your own.

Which One Should You Make?
For a first blanket, take Handy Little Me’s baby blanket (#2) or Bella Coco’s easy moss blanket (#8). Both have a video, and the chunky one is finished in a few evenings.
If you want a specific size, Morine’s custom-size guide (#7) shows how to work out the starting chain, and the Daisy Farm With Love blanket (#9) gives exact yardage for a 32 by 37 inch baby blanket.
If you already know the stitch and want something different, try the C2C version (#3) or the rainbow stripes (#1), which turn scrap colors into a pattern.
FAQ
What is the moss stitch in crochet?
Single crochet, chain 1, skip a stitch, repeat. On the next row you work each single crochet into the chain space below. That is why it also goes by linen stitch, granite stitch and woven stitch: the chains and stitches offset and look woven.
How much yarn does a moss stitch blanket take?
The designers here list it per pattern. As examples from this list, a 32 by 37 inch baby blanket took 3 skeins of Red Heart With Love (about 1,100 yards), and a lap blanket in bulky yarn took 8 skeins. The stitch is dense, so expect a little more yarn than a granny stitch blanket of the same size.
Why does my moss stitch blanket get narrower?
The first and last stitch of each row get missed. Put a stitch marker in the first stitch of every row, and count the stitches every few rows until the edges stay straight. A hook one size larger than the label also keeps the fabric from pulling in.
Make a 20-stitch swatch tonight, check the drape, and start the blanket with the hook that feels right in your hand.
